Getting publicity for a business is the key to achieving success. No matter what kind of enterprise it is you are running, letting the people know that your business exists is a must. A press release is basically a one page story about the business you have and the products and services you offer. It can also be about an event that has, or is about to take place at your business establishment.
The very first thing to prepare when planning to have a press release is the publicity story. This is the material that will be published or broadcast in your chosen media. If this is your first time to have a press release, focus on writing about your business, its nature, the line of products and services that you offer. Also, do not forget to include in the report how the community is going to benefit from the existence of such business establishment and what they have to expect from your enterprise.
If you want a press release regarding an event that is about to take place, the important details that need to be stated in the report include the purpose of the event, what is it about, known personalities that would be attending, and of course, the date and time of the affair.
Aside from the publicity report, a cover letter should also be written. This is a letter that needs to be sent out to all the people who will manage your material. These individuals include the editors of various newspapers, managing editors of different trade publications as well as news directors of radio and TV stations. They are the people who have the final say as to what is to be broadcast or published. In the cover letter, you should state briefly what your material is about and how it is of importance to the paper’s readers or TV/radio program’s audience.
Make sure to double-check the press release. Proof it for typographical errors, misspelled words and names, or errors in dates. Check it more than once if necessary to be sure that it is letter perfect. When everything is perfectly prepared, send the copies to the media of your choice.
